Further starting to practice some of the many moves presented in the book has revealed their beauty and potential.
The book is divided into two sections, "Card table artifice", dealing with cheating at draw poker false shuffles, false cuts, bottom dealing, palming, etc.
The entire book is written in a very engaging and amusing style, and although describing complex hand movements in words is notoriously difficult, it is fairly easy to follow the instructions for the various moves described, with the aid of the provided drawings.
And the moves are many. A performer could easily make a career strictly by mastering the slights contained in this gem. It is hard to pick favorites from everything described in this book, but I wanted to try.
The "Mexican Three Card Monte" move is one of my favorites, because it is so simple you can master it in about 5 minutes , yet looks so smooth and is very hard to detect.
Probably overall, my favorite move I have ever seen is described in this book -- the "Diagonal Palm-Shift". It is hard to put into words how elegant this move is; when I first saw a video clip of Dai Vernon performing it, I rewatched the same 5 seconds about 20 times in a row, because it is so amazing and unbelievable to see.
Anyway, this book is a classic, and remains useful today, more than years after its publication. It is great. Really great. All of the written information is there which is your meat and potatoes, and I'm happy to own that.
BUT all the the illustrations in the printing are pixelated and hard to see. Will gain everything I can from this book then most likely resell and get a better quality version for the shelf.
One person found this helpful. Paul Wilson, along with the book Expert Card Technique. Both of those were great learning tools, but I was very exciting when I purchased a Hardcover copy of Expert at the Card Table for a reasonable price.
The book has a nice medium, dark wooden color to it with just regular black letters for the title of the book. My copy has a scratch down the back, but it isn't noticeable while looking at it, only when you run your hand down the back of the book.
Now even though a majority of these sleights and some effects are out-dated, but if it were not for these specific sleights and card routines, then we wouldn't have nearly as many creative Magicians who really pour their heart and soul into their work.
Which is the exact same feeling that I get whenever I am reading Expert at the Card Table, and there have been a few occasions when the author refers to himself as "we" so it could very well be more than just one person writing such a revolutionary book on cards.
This is a must have book in every musician's book collection and it must be read many times over. It is worth the time. A 12 yr old can learn it!
My son has been reading this and learning new ways to manipulate cards - so much that a semi-professional magician is impressed with what he can do!

As an example, everyone talks up Royal Road to Card Magic. I've read it twice, but to me it's not great. The reason is I've never put in the work the book requires to make it worthwhile.
I'm sure it is a great book. I just don't give it the time it truly deserves. Now, not to say you didn't work at Expert at the Card Table.
I have no idea. Just my opinion, the 'classics' as it were, need that work. Maybe one day I'll quit being so lazy and spend time with these books.
The only "bible" in card magic is the one you give and get the most out of. I hope this makes sense. I talk better than I write.
I think Madison and Erdnase have a lot in common. Neither are that great but lots of people think otherwise. Also, despite my love for Martin Gardner's work in puzzles, math and magic, it is likely that his guess as to the identity of Erdnase is incorrect.
But besides the point of E x M, I'm talking more so of the book. RealityOne likes this. Erdnase really is all that If you have the time to sit down read, and practice.
The Expert at the Card Table has been used by many of the top card men as a sort of blueprint to attain the highest levels of card mastery.
There is a reason why it has been in circulation for over years. I don't know everything , but I do know when I see a recurring pattern.
Why would so many publishing companies put out The Expert at the Card Table , is it for their health?? That being said , I think everyone here made a good point about why Erdnase is or isn't all that.
I am personally with the former, but still have a lot of learning ahead of me, I have 5 different copies laying around in my room. Andrews And let's not forget my signed copy , but that is not for reading so I excluded that one.

Dai Vernon is credited with popularizing this influential text in the community of professional magicians.
Well past ninety years of age, Vernon was fond of quoting from it, with page numbers, when discussing card techniques with his colleagues at the Magic Castle.
